Gourmet on the Go!

Gourmet on the Go!
When not slaving away with only Twitter and mad dog for company, I occasionally have a 'life.' This usually entails cooking for friends, trying far too many wines, and the occasional entire day out. I will post my ramblings, recipes and recommendations here on the 'Gourmet on the Go' blog. Hope you find something of interest!

RAMSAY’S BEST RESTAURANT – Make your vote count

Filed under: Celebrations & Events,Foodie Competitions — Tags: , , , , , , , , — gourmet-on-the-go @ 12:40 pm

Ramsay's Restaurants - To Nominate your fav, Click me...An exciting new series for Channel 4…

‘Ramsay’s Best Restaurant’ is an exciting new series dedicated to celebrating the finest restaurants in the UK. Restaurants nominated by the public will be tested to the highest level by Michelin starred chef Gordon Ramsay and the series will culminate in one culinary hero being crowned ‘Ramsay’s Best Restaurant’.

Gordon’s journey will see him travel the length and the breadth of Britain in search of brilliant restaurants that deliver gastronomic perfection and wonderful customer service. He’ll meet restaurant owners who refuse to be daunted by the threat from ubiquitous chains and who are determined to survive the recession on their own terms and with their exceptionally high standards intact. He’ll seek out culinary heroes working in the kitchens and front of house at independent restaurants across the UK whose brilliance deserves to be recognised.

Each of the eight heats will focus on a different type of cuisine including Italian, French, Indian and British categories and this year there’s a new category – Fine Dining. Will one of the big boys of the restaurant world come out on top? Or will a small local restaurant take down the Goliaths of the kitchen? The chef’s culinary abilities will be tested as Gordon sets the kitchen brigades some of the toughest challenges they’ve faced in their careers. The pressure will truly be on as the competitors could face anything in their heat, in the super tough semi-finals and in the head-to-head cook-off that is the series final. Only one brilliant contender can win the title of “Ramsay’s Best Restaurant.” Who will it be?

The series will follow the highs and lows of the passionate chefs, restaurateurs and of Gordon himself as he tries to find his worthy champion.

Restaurants can only take part in the competition if they’ve been nominated. We’re looking for restaurants of the highest calibre so if you know a fantastic restaurant that is worthy of the title then please visit and nominate them now.

So come on people of Essex, make your vote count and nominate your favourite restaurant in the area, it would be great to see an Essex business featured on the programme!

The Best Fish and Chip Shops in Essex – To Celebrate the 150th Birthday of Fish & Chips

fish_and_chipsDid you know that it is the 150th Birthday of Fish & Chips?  Exciting isn’t it!?  I would like to say that I sourced this information from a newspaper wrapped portion of our nation’s favourite take out, although, I actually read it on-line… whilst lazing… in my bed.

Still, to celebrate the grand ole age of 150, Essex Gourmet has decided to seek and find the very best Fish & Chip Shops in Essex, to share and delight!  But first, to whet your appetite, here are some interesting trivia facts that also inspired me from The Independent’s article:

  • An average serving of chips contains more than double the fibre found in an average serving of brown rice or bowl of porridge.
  • Fish and chips outsell Indian takeaways by four to one.
  • Fish and chips came top of two surveys as a national icon, beating the Queen, Princess Diana and the Beatles.
  • An average portion of battered cod and chips has fewer calories, saturated fat and salt than a cheese and tomato pizza.

So there you have it – Fish and Chips are relatively healthy in comparison to alternative take-away choices, and are deemed more British than the Queen.  So crack open the bubbly – Champagne, Cava, Vinho Verde or a good Riesling all pair well – and celebrate with a big portion of Fish and Chips from Essex’s finest:

n Chickn – 2 Kidcaps, The Knares, Basildon, Essex, SS16 5UD
