Cafe Knead Bakery @ The Blue Egg

The Blue Egg is situated in Great Bardfield, 8 miles north west of Braintree town centre and 12 ½ miles south east of Saffron Walden.

In today’s modern and hectic world, juggling work, family and social commitments can take up more time than we have – literally.  Hence, convenience food and shopping have become an attractive prospect, although at what cost?  Wanting to prepare a healthy, hearty meal in a hurry does not have to mean buying salt, sugar, fat and additive laden produce that has travelled miles to reach your local supermarket – there are other choices and better ones at that.

The Blue Egg is a farm shop, deli, bakery, café, gift shop and post office all rolled into one, offering the convenience of being able to shop for the majority of your weekly produce in one go; milk, eggs, cheese, bread, chicken, bacon, sausages, sliced meat, sauces, ready-meals, vegetables, fruit, pasta, rice, condiments, snacks, cakes… the list goes on.  However, what really stands out is that all of the produce is sourced locally, with an emphasis on quality, taste, seasonality and value for money.

You will be hard pressed to find any additives listed here, from the delicious range of ‘Cook’ everyday ready meals to the wonderful choice of freshly baked bread made using local flour, to locally reared pork and free range chicken to delicious labour saving gourmet ready made sauces.

If you fancy a snack whilst you shop, Café Knead at the back of the store serves freshly cooked breakfasts, lunches and afternoon teas created in house using fresh, locally sourced ingredients.  A good selection of artisan breads are baked every morning, along with some fantastic pies, pastries, cakes and quiches – eat in or take home, the choice is yours.

Good food is not all that is on the menu at The Blue Egg, within this large and attractive converted barn is a wealth of distinctive and individual gifts, from home wares and soft furnishings to children’s toys and gifts for new babies, to arts, crafts and fine linens – there really is a gift for all occasions, plus you can pick up a card, some gift wrap and post it while you are there at the post office.  I did mention convenience now didn’t I?
