Holt of Witham is situated just off of the A12, 8 ½ miles northeast of Chelmsford and 15 miles southwest of Colchester.

Established in 1942, Holts Butchers have seen decades come and go, consumer trends and tastes change, customer requirements differ.  Yet in all that time, Holts have never compromised their standards of providing high quality meat and produce sourced as locally as possible from trusted, traditional farmers.

Holts have adapted to modern needs, now incorporating an online shop into their website for consumers to buy a wealth of produce at their leisure, although have remained true to the traditional quality standards that have been passed through the generations.

On entering the shop, you are met with both worlds; a beautiful and enticing array of excellent meat, home smoked produce and homemade pies are carefully arranged in shiny modern display units, although served by traditionally clad, experienced master butchers, in their striped aprons and straw boater hats.  

Traceability seems to be the buzzword of the moment; as consumers, many of us want to know where our meat comes from, how it was reared and assured that welfare standards are adhered to.  Ask one of the butchers at Holts a question regarding traceability and you will get a full history, from ‘gate to plate’ as it were.

Good relationships with local farmers and those further afield have been built up over the years, those that provide consistent, excellent quality meat have remained reliable sources for the produce stocked by Holts, where as others have fallen by the wayside.

Traditionally reared, high quality produce that tastes fantastic, cooks well and comes with a reasonable price tag is the order of the day; from succulent and tender Dedham Vale Beef (used by Gordon Ramsay on his ‘Taste of Christmas’ menu for the Boxwood Café) to naturally reared, flavoursome Creedy Carver Poultry from Devon, to in-house traditionally smoked Salmon from the West coast of Scotland.  Consistent, full flavoured, high quality produce and excellent customer service is assured at Holts, this comes as standard.

I can't say enough good things about Holt's. They don't pump their beef full of water to make it weigh more, which means you can cook it properly. It sears to a lovely brown. It's aged to perfection. They have the best scotch eggs I've ever tasted. You can taste the difference between their pork and chicken and the stuff you get in the supermarkets. They're extremely friendly and helpful. They give cooking advice and never act like cutting something for you is a chore.

I've used Holts a few times now, mainly for when I'm doing a special meal because even though reasonably priced, my local butcher is slightly cheaper for the more usual items. With Holts ther's generally no need to order specialised meats in. Staff are amazingly polite & the produce is fantastic, I can't help but spend money here. Their home made pasties are excellent & free range eggs are cheaper than any supermarket. A great old fashioned butcher that takes me back to childhood (30 yrs).
