N.S.Risdon at Calcott Hall, are a top quality butchers that provide the best of local, tracable meat, poultry and seasonal game, and just as importantly, the knowledge to cook it right.
Neil has been a butcher for over 13 years and truly believes that quality, local meat, that's been traditionally reared and well butchered is what every customer deserves.
The beef is locally sourced and hung for 21 days, the flavour is outstanding. With different local farmers supplying the beef you will know where it came from and what breed it is. That's traceability.
All of the pork is free range and reared near Shalford , Braintree.
Risdens dry cure their own bacon, ensuring the best possible flavour. It means you won't get that nasty white residue that you sometimes see in other types of bacon, which have been injected with brine. Dry curing is a simple process which involves coating the pork in a cure mixture containing mainly salt, and leaving for a period of up to 2 weeks. Smoking is done traditionally over pine and oak chips to give the smoked bacon, a delicate flavour, without being overpowering.
The Sausages, Chipolatas & Burgers are handmade in house using the same pork that they sell over the counter, unlike many sausages that use cheap imported cuts of pork. Should you be in need of gluten free burgers or sausages Neil can also help you out. In his freezer he keeps some gluten free Pork, Lamb and Beef burgers 'that he prepared earlier'.
The lamb is again free range and from Ashford, Kent. Reared traditionally the flavour is fantastic.
Rabbit, hare, venison, partridge, pheasant and quail are available (when in season) and have been shot locally so you can be sure they are fresh and tasty.
Poultry is all locally sourced, with 2 different ranges to choose from, both of which adhere to the RSPCA freedom foods scheme as a minimum standard.
Also available are frozen chicken carcasses and whole marrow bones, ideal for stocks and soups.

Great quality produce, Nice to know there is somewhere to buy meat, where you can ask where it has come from and they know. And tastes like meat should do. Would reccommend to anyone to try them.

Excellent choice available with a first class service offered. Great range of specialist foods. Definetely worth a visit for anyone who has not ventured here before.

Absolutely Fantastic!!!
We visit Calcott Farm as much as possible and have been doing so for 5 years now.
The quality of food is brilliant and reasonably priced to.
They do have very nice cakes so if you're dieting don't visit whilst hungry.
Calcott farm continually update the store and have extended the shop a lot in recent years. At Christmas time they have a huge stock of Christmas trees again reasonably priced, I will be getting our one this year from them - AGAIN.
Well worth a visit!

I'd recommend Calcott Hall farmshop to anyone, it's the best in the area and has such a wide choice of food and drink. I shop here weekly and have done for over two years now.
