A good butchers is a great find, an excellent butchers is something to be cherished; Sweetland's falls into the latter category. The standard of meat available is superb, as is the selection; from prime local beef, lamb, pork and chicken to seasonal game, cooked or cured meats, offal and specialist cuts – all trimmed and prepared to your exact personal requirements by the highly skilled butchers.
Every time I visit Sweetland’s there is always a shop full of customers, happily waiting their turn for the kind of personal service that is fast becoming a rarity. If you want a joint boned, stuffed and rolled, no problem; if you want some of the fat trimmed off of your chops or steaks, they are happy to oblige - this level of high quality service come as standard, as does some very entertaining banter that flies around the shop.
Excellent Service and banter aside, the reason this second generation butchers has remained in business for over 50 years, attracting and keeping a large and loyal customer base is the supreme quality of the meat they provide.
The beef and pork are sourced from Barnston, just under two miles away; the Lamb from Easton, some 4 miles away and the fresh poultry and free range eggs from Tiptree. This is the best of local produce from selected traditional farmers who take care and pride in the way their animals are reared and the full flavour and wonderful texture of the meat that is produced.
Homemade and cooked fare also features quite highly, try their own sausages which are extremely popular, as is their sausage meat stuffing with chestnut, apricot, dates and bacon – wonderful with chicken, turkey, lamb or duck. And if like me you are a lover of a good coq au vin, pop along and buy a slab of cured bacon and a plump cockerel for a fabulous one pot wonder.
If you want to pick up some fabulous fresh shallots and stock vegetables whilst you visit, a very good greengrocer holds a large stall beside the shop on a Friday and Saturday.
