If there is such thing as foodie heaven, I do hope it resembles the Manningtree Deli. The vast selection of fine foods and drinks, both local and International, is just outstanding.
On entering, your eye is drawn to the large, long deli counter, housing a whole array of wonderful cheeses, pates, meats and sausages, as well as a superb selection of marinated olives and handmade pies.
The fine cheeses alone lure me to this deli, there is an excellent choice of over seventy five; from a creamy Suffolk Gold, sourced from just up the road, to a sumptuous, ripe French Brie, crying out for a slab of good bread and an excellent glass of wine; both of which you will have to look no further. You are welcome to try the cheeses before you buy, or visit over the weekend to indulge in the cheese tasting's that are on offer.
To the left, the shelves are stocked ceiling high with a fine choice of condiments; from local chutneys, preserves and relishes to imported high quality oils and vinegars. If you want something to go with your cheese, the choice of biscuits available is superb as is the selection of freshly baked breads.
Go through to the back of the shop and enter a rather drunken Aladdin’s cave of wines, ports and liqueurs; not just your average ensemble, we are talking from everyday drinking wines, such as a South African Helderberg Chardonnay to highly acclaimed vintage wines such as the impressive Chateau Mouton Rothschild, 1996; difficult to source quality European liqueurs and the finest Cognac's and Armagnac's.
If like me, you are a great lover of vintage Port, the fine selection on offer will bring about a child like glee in you, some of the finest vintages throughout the last century are present from the classic 1994 vintage, an outstanding vintage Port that will improve with age, to a Vintage 1963; a monumental vintage, against which all other ports are judged, that makes sublime drinking now.
My advice to you would be to arm yourself with a large picnic hamper, rush out when you see a glimpse of the sun and head to the Manningtree Deli. You can then stock up on a couple of freshly baked rustic and European loaves, some delicious cheese, maybe a good portion of Pate, some olives, cured meats and a fabulous bottle of wine and port, then stroll down to the quay, make yourself comfortable and watch the world and wild life go by whilst enjoying your delectable feast; a perfect day, in my book at least.
