Calcott Hall Farm Shop is situated on the Ongar Road, just over half a mile from the main high street in Brentwood.
There is a bounty of reasonably priced fine food and drink on sale within the farm shop, far too many items to list, however, if you can imagine a quality greengrocer, butcher, deli, grocers and wine/beer off seller, all rolled into one, then you will have a good idea of the produce available, all under one roof; the vast majority of which is fresh, seasonal and produced locally.
Don’t be fooled into thinking that just because you are buying fresh, seasonal food, you will need to pay a lot extra. Because the produce is produced locally and travels a minimal distance to reach the shop, you may find that you actually save money on your weekly shop, as well as reducing the large amounts of packaging you need to recycle. So there really is no need to compromise on taste.
The working farm has been owned and run by the McTurk family since 1974 and grows and sells over thirty of their own fruit and vegetable crops. This really is as fresh as you can get bar growing your own, and without all the hard work and backache. The taste and nutritional value of farm fresh fruit and vegetables is superb, and you know that you are buying seasonal produce when it comes direct from the farm.
As well as fresh produce from the farm, there is an abundance of excellent food and drink sourced from producers in the local area. The farm shop takes great care in selecting outside sources for produce and aims for high quality, traditionally produced products, from respected businesses that are situated as local as possible, and offer good value for money.
The wonderful array of meat and poultry is sourced mainly from Billericay, Chelmsford and as far a field as Suffolk; a mere 14 mile hike. The majority of which is from stock that has been traditionally reared and slowly matured on natural feed, without the use of additives or genetically modified products; the result is truly tasty and tender, full flavoured meat that cooks and tastes as it should – naturally.
If you would like an accompaniment to go with your meat and veg, perhaps you could opt for some freshly baked bread; a handmade condiment using the finest of local ingredients; some fresh free range or organic eggs, even duck eggs if you prefer; maybe a glass of smooth, fruity Pinot Noir from Purleigh, near Maldon, or a cool, refreshing glass of Umbel Ale from Suffolk to compliment your meal. You could finish it all off with a slice of freshly baked, hand made fruit pie and some award winning, hand made ice cream from Suffolk. You will be spoilt for choice.
