The Crowded House Brasserie (Prev Crofters) is situated in Maldon road just off of the High Street in Witham; a pleasant Georgian town 9 miles North of Chelmsford and 14 miles South of Colchester, which has easy access from the A12.

The Crowded House Brasserie is set in what was originally a large 18th century cottage. The interior still retains much of the wonderful original features including dark timber beamed high ceilings and a beautiful open fireplace.

The owner, David, took over in 2004 and is proud of the fact that it remains one of Essex’s longest running wine bars and brasseries; having been serving customers for over 25 years.

The layout is large and spacious, decorated in warm earthy tones. There is ample seating stretching across two rooms; each with large wooden tables and high backed comfortable seating. It is a place to relax, unwind and enjoy a laid back drink or meal with all of the family at your leisure, in an informal, pleasantly buzzing atmosphere.

The menu changes seasonally and offers a range of tasty, straight forward Modern British dishes created in house using fresh, seasonal ingredients; much of which is sourced locally. You will find a scattering of Thai/Asian influenced dishes on the menu, inspired by the Chef, Ian Preston, who with over twenty years culinary experience, has cooked in Australia, China and Thailand, as well as London.

A daily Specials Board lists further seasonal dishes to tempt you. Fixed price lunch and dinner menus are available Monday to Friday and a reasonably priced light/express lunch; for those who want good food served within a limited time frame, or prefer a lighter option.

There is a well stocked bar and a wine list offering a good choice wines, champagnes, desert wine and port; all at a reasonable price. For something a little different, Crowded House have a ‘wines and champagnes of the month’ board, all sold by the bottle, or the glass.

Our Summary
Informal relaxed dining, in comfortable vibrant surroundings, with a pleasant Brasserie buzz. Great freshly cooked food at very reasonable prices, skilfully prepared using fresh, seasonal ingredients; much of which is sourced locally. Good choice of wines and champagnes. Family friendly.

As relative regulars, we were slightly concerned that the departure of their last chef would mean the food deteriorated. Happily, this is not the case and the favourites on the menu (Ham Hock terrine and a wickedly buttery Bakewell Tart( are still there. Service is friendly and efficient, great place for weekend lunches.

We were really surprised at this little find, I'd never heard of it before. We booked for the live music and meal. Really, really good food at a good price. The place was packed and buzzing, yet we were still served reasonably quickly by the friendly staff. The only downside is that the lighting was a little dark which is fine for just enjoying a good wine and music, although I would have prefered a little more light when eating.
